Preparing your motorhome for spring.

With the arrival of spring, it's time to dust off your motorhome and get ready for adventure. From the open roads to scenic campsites, there's no better way to experience the beauty of the season than in the comfort of a motorhome. But before you hit the road, it's important to ensure your motorhome is prepared for the journey ahead.

Clean the exterior

  • Spring cleaning is not just for your home; it's also essential for your motorhome. Start by giving the exterior a thorough cleaning to remove any dirt, dust and grime that has accumulated over the winter months.
  • While cleaning, pay close attention to any signs of wear and tear on the exterior. Check for cracks, leaks or loose fittings. Ensure that all windows, doors and vents are properly sealed. Don't forget to inspect the awning for any damage or mould growth.
  • It's also important to check the tyre pressure and tread depth and replace any worn-out tyres. Inspect the brakes for any signs of damage or excessive wear and test all the lights, including headlights, brake lights and indicators to ensure they are in proper working order.

Inspect and service the engine and mechanical components

  • Spring is the perfect time to give your engine and other mechanical components some much-needed attention. Start by checking the oil level and condition and replace it if necessary. Inspect the air filters and clean or replace them as needed and check the coolant level, topping it up if required.
  • Inspect the belts and hoses for any signs of wear or damage and replace any worn-out parts to prevent breakdowns on the road. Check the battery for corrosion and ensure it is fully charged or consider replacing it if it’s an older battery.
  • Check for any leaks or unusual sounds in the steering and suspension. Lubricate the necessary parts to ensure smooth operation.

Prepare the interior

  • After a long winter, it's important to freshen up the interior of your motorhome. Remove any items that you no longer need or use to create more space and make your motorhome feel more inviting and comfortable.
  • Thoroughly clean all surfaces, including countertops, floors, and furniture. A clean and tidy interior will create a pleasant environment for your spring adventures.
  • While cleaning, inspect the interior for any signs of damage or wear. Check for water leaks, mould growth, or any pests that might have found their way inside and repair or replace any damaged parts.

Check and maintain the electrical system and appliances

  • Check the wiring for any signs of wear or damage and test all the electrical sockets and switches to ensure they are functioning properly. Also, check the fuse box and replace any blown fuses.
  • Test each appliance to ensure they are in proper working order. Clean or replace any filters to maintain optimal performance. If you have a generator, service it according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Pack spare light bulbs, fuses, and batteries for emergencies to save you from any unexpected electrical issues during your spring adventures.

Test and replenish the water and gas systems

  • The water and gas systems in your motorhome need attention, including the water pump and taps to ensure a steady flow of water. Check for any leaks or unusual sounds and inspect the water tanks for any signs of damage or contamination.
  • If you have a water heater, test it to ensure it is functioning properly and clean or replace the filters. Check the gas lines and connections for any leaks or damage and if you detect any issues, have them repaired by a professional before hitting the road.
  • Pack spare water hoses, connectors, and gas cylinders to ensure you don’t find yourself without essential resources during your travels.

Safety considerations

  • Before setting off, ensure that your insurance and registration are up to date. Familiarise yourself with any legal requirements and regulations specific to your destination.
  • Check the weather forecast and road conditions before setting off too; spring weather in the UK can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes.
  • Practice safe driving habits and take regular breaks to rest and stretch your legs, especially during long drives and adhere to speed limits and traffic rules.
  • Ensure that you have a well-stocked emergency kit that includes a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, torch, and roadside assistance contact information.
  • Stay connected with friends and family during your travels. Share your itinerary with a trusted contact and check in regularly to let them know you're safe. Consider investing in a mobile hotspot or satellite phone for areas with limited coverage.
